Life Expectancy at Scotland Level - Scottish National Life Tables
Life Expectancy at Scotland Level - Scottish National Life Tables
Last Updated: 3 October 2016
Background
The latest National Life Tables for Scotland publication. It shows trends regarding the average number of years people in Scotland will live beyond their current age by age and sex. Each year, graduated National Life Tables are produced for the United Kingdom and the constituent countries by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The statistics are period life expectancies and use data from three consecutive years. Additional commentary on life expectancy can be found in the Registrar General’s Annual Review.
Table 1 contains period life expectancy for Scotland back to 1861-70. Each life expectancy figure is based on aggregate mortality rates for the groups of years shown. The data provides a historical comparison in which fluctuations in mortality that occur between calendar years have been smoothed out to some extent.
Table 2 shows extracts from the most recent Scottish National Life Tables (also known as period life tables or ungraduated life tables) for selected ages.
Historic Life Tables for the UK and its constituent countries are available on the ONS website. The detailed 2013-15 National Life Tables for the UK and its constituent countries are also available on the ONS website. The tables provide period life expectancy for males and females by single year of age (0 to 100), for three-year rolling periods.
