Life Expectancy for Administrative Areas within Scotland

Time Series Data

The files below have been made available as Excel spreadsheets. When opening the spreadsheet files your browser, depending on how it has been configured, will prompt to either open the file or save it to disk.

The time series data for Scotland and council areas from 2001-2003 to 2013-2015 has been updated to use the 90 years and over upper age band in the calculations, introduced in the 2013-2015 publication. It also uses the corrected 2012 to 2014 mid-year population estimates, published in April 2016. Therefore these historical estimates can be compared with the latest 2013-2015 estimates as they are calculated on the same basis.

The time series data for the other geographies will be updated at a later date to use the 90 years and over upper age band, as well as the corrected 2012 to 2014 mid-year population estimates. Currently they are based on the uncorrected 2012 to 2014 mid-year estimates and use the 85 years and over upper age band in the life expectancy calculations. Therefore, these historical estimates should not be compared directly with the latest 2013-2015 estimates, as they are calculated on a different basis.

As the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) had not been updated for use with the new 2011 Census data zones, life expectancy estimates for this classification were not updated for 2012-2014. In future, estimates will be produced using the 2016 SIMD Classification.

As Community Health Partnerships no longer exist, life expectancy estimates will no longer be produced at this geography.
