Description
The SIMD employment domain is constructed by counting the number of people claiming a selection of benefits, and the percentage calculated by dividing that sum by the working age population taken from the 2014 small area population estimates.
The benefits used to calculate the employment indicator are as follows:
Working age unemployment claimant count averaged over 12 months (Source: NOMIS)
Working age Incapacity Benefit recipients or Employment and Support Allowance recipients (Source: DWP)
Working age Severe Disablement Allowance recipients (Source: DWP)
The technical notes for SIMD16 can be found here.

Quality Management
The Employment domain is calculated by adding all three indicators and dividing them by the (unrevised) 2014 mid-year working age population estimate (source: NRS).
In two data zones, S01010206 and S01010227, the population was zero in the year considered, and employment rates could not be determined.
Accuracy and Reliability
Figures for counts at Data Zone level were rounded to the nearest 5. Rates were rounded to the nearest whole number.
Counts for higher level geographies are based on the aggregation of rounded Data Zone level figures.
Coherence and Comparability
Data zone level indicator scores cannot be compared between 2001 and 2011 data zones due to changed data zone boundaries.
