Population Estimates Time Series Data

Correction – 29 November 2018
We regret that an ordering issue led to an error in the table displaying the Mid-year population estimates: Scotland and its council areas by single year of age and sex 1981 to 2017– This only affected data for City of Edinburgh and Clackmannanshire for the year 2007. All other years are unaffected. We apologise for the error and any inconvenience caused.

Correction – please note NRS identified an error in the Scottish mid-year population estimates for 2002 to 2010 affecting the age distribution of older age groups which made the 90+ population too small and the population of those aged 81 to 89 too large. Corrected population estimates were published on 25 September 2018. Further information on the error can be found within this document.

This page contains datasets in Excel format. This data will be particularly useful for users who would like the same data for a series of different years rather than just for one year.

Note 1: Tables are mainly offered for the purposes of extracting figures. Due to the size of some of the files they are not recommended for printing.

Note 2: If you experience difficulty downloading the files, please contact our Statistics Customer Services to request a disk with the full file.

Note 3: National Records of Scotland no longer publishes NHS Board area estimates for pre-April 2006 and pre-April 2014 boundaries.
