This publication provides monthly information on the number of bed days occupied by hospital inpatients who are ready for discharge but whose discharge has been delayed. Figures are shown for Scotland, NHS Board area of treatment and Local Authority of residence for patients aged 18 and over.
The ISD protocol on Statistical Disclosure Protocol is followed.

All delayed discharge reports are accessible via the ISD website. Tables and charts are presented within an interactive Excel workbook with drop down boxes.
Key uses of delayed discharge information include monitoring policy obligations both locally and nationally, helping to troubleshoot in partnership areas with specific problems, facilitating benchmarking with other areas, identifying the potential release of resources to focus on more appropriate care and providing useful dialogue between health and social care agencies.
Delayed discharge information is also used to respond to information requests (including FOI requests) from a variety of customers and parliamentary questions.
Data are available for publication within six to eight weeks of the census month.
NHS Lothian, ISD have revised figures for the period Sep 2017 to Jan 2018. NHS Lothian identified that a change in their computer system had introduced an error in NHS Ayrshire & Arran identified that a change in their computer system introduced an error in reporting some records for August 2018. ISD have revised census and bed day figures for August 2018, and as a result of the corrections, the census figure has reduced by 17, and the bed days figure has reduced by 241.reporting some records for the months Sep 2017 to Jan 2018. This has resulted in an average increase for NHS Lothian of 1,123 delayed bed days and 24 census delays per month over this period. Figures for Feb 2018 onwards are unaffected. Delays reported in NHS Lothian hospitals include residents of local authorities within and out with the health board area.
