Population by Country of Birth and Nationality, Scotland, 2016

24 August 2017

First Correction - 25 August 2017
We regret that an ordering issue was discovered with the councils in tables 2 and 3 leading to the correct data being associated with the wrong council. The web version of this has now been corrected. We apologise for any problems or inconvenience caused by our error.

Second Correction - 6 November 2017
We regret that an issue was discovered with the nationality totals for table 5. The ‘total non-British national population’ column for the years 2004-2016 instead displayed data for total non-UK country of birth for these years. The total ‘non-British’ population was correct in all other tables. The web version of this table has now been updated. We apologise for any problems or inconvenience caused by our error.

Introduction

Estimates of the Scottish population by Country of Birth and Nationality from the Annual Population Survey (APS).

These figures differ from the official mid-year population estimates (MYE) published by National Records of Scotland (NRS), as the APS excludes students in halls who do not have a parent resident in the UK and people in most other types of communal establishments (for example hotels, boarding houses, hostels, care homes, prisons, mobile home sites, etc). Whilst the official MYE are available by sex and age, the APS can be used to provide population estimates by additional variables, including country of birth and nationality.

The latest figures are for the year to end of December 2016. Comparable UK figures can be found on the ONS website.
