Background 

Migration between Scotland and overseas refers to people moving between Scotland and any country outside the UK.

Due to the sources of data used by National Records of Scotland (NRS) to estimate migration, the country or group of countries that overseas migrants come from cannot be identified.

	Migration between administrative areas and overseas by sex Dataset includes: In, out and net migration between Scottish administrative areas and overseas by sex, from 2001-02 to most recent. Please note that NHS Board level data for migration between 2001-02 and 2010-11 can be found in the Archive section of the National Records of Scotland (NRS) website. (Excel   CSV)
	Migration between Scotland and overseas by age Dataset includes: In, out and net migration between Scotland and overseas by age group, from 2001-02 to most recent, and migration between Scotland and overseas by single year of age and sex, from 2001-02 to most recent. (Excel   CSV)

Long-Term International Migration (LTIM) is a method used by ONS to estimate international migration to and from the UK. Further details of how the International Passenger Survey (IPS) and LTIM are used in NRS estimates of migration can be found in the Methodology section of this website.

In March 2020 the IPS was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Overseas migration for March to June 2020 has been modelled using alternative data sources. More information on the methodology can be found on the ONS website.
