Fourth Quarter 2016
This release presents provisional figures for vital events which were registered in Scotland in the period from 1 October 2016 to 31 December 2016, inclusive. The tables and chart (available below) provide statistics of births, stillbirths, marriages, civil partnerships and deaths, including:
- quarterly figures for Scotland for each of the past eleven years;
- the totals for each Local Authority and NHS Board area for the latest quarter; and
- more detailed analyses of the numbers of deaths (for example cross-classified by sex, cause and NHS Board area) for the latest quarter.
Main Points
- 12,993 births were registered in Scotland between 1 October and 31 December 2016 – 459 (3.4 per cent) fewer than in the same period of 2015.
- 14,572 deaths were registered in the fourth quarter of the year – 507 (3.6 per cent) more than in the same period of 2015.
- Compared with the same period in 2015, the number of deaths from cancer fell by 1.0 per cent to 3,991, deaths from coronary heart disease fell by 3.6 per cent to 1,692 and there were 1,073 deaths from cerebrovascular disease (an increase of 5.6 per cent). Deaths from respiratory system disease rose by 10.8 per cent to 1,935. Deaths from dementia rose by 8.7 per cent to 1,003 and deaths from Alzheimer’s Disease rose by 26.4 per cent to 580.
- There were 6,366 marriages, 184 more than the figure for the fourth quarter of 2015 (a rise of 3.0 per cent). Of the total, 208 were same-sex marriages.
- There were 17 civil partnerships (8 male and 9 female), three more than during the fourth quarter of 2015.
