Description

Number and EASR of hospital stays related to a drug misuse diagnosis. Hospital activity is data routinely drawn from hospital administrative systems across all NHS hospitals in Scotland. These data contain statistics derived from General Acute Inpatient / Day cases Records (Scottish Morbidity Records 01 or SMR01 database), which includes all inpatient and day cases discharged from acute medical specialties (all specialties other than mental health, maternity, neonatal and geriatric long stay specialties), and where drug misuse was mentioned in the records at some point during the patients’ hospital stay.

Quality Management

Quality checks are conducted by ISD. Figures are compared to previously published data and expected trends.

Accuracy and Reliability

Quality checks are conducted by ISD. Figures are compared to previously published data and expected trends.

Coherence and Comparability

The previous open data submission only included stays with a diagnosis of mental and behavioural disorders due to substance use. This data submission is based on the revised definition of a drug-related hospital stay that includes both mental & behavioural diagnoses and drug poisoning/overdose diagnoses. Previous open data is comparable within the drug-related hospital stay dashboard by selecting ‘mental and behavioural’ in the ’Clinical type’ field.

Accessibility and Clarity

It is the policy of ISD Scotland to make its web sites and products accessible according to published guidelines.

Relevance

Relevant to understanding drug misuse in Scotland. Statistics will be used for policy making and service planning.

Timeliness and Punctuality

These statistics are updated annually.

Revisions

All data are revised annually to reflect any changes to analysis and to ensure the most complete information is presented. Minor revisions of this nature are often due to incomplete data returns at the time of previous publication. The latest available National Records of Scotland mid-year population estimates were used in EASR calculations. At the time of the analysis, the latest estimates were for the year 2017.

The previous open data submission only included stays with a diagnosis of mental and behavioural disorders due to substance use. This data submission is based on the revised definition of a drug-related hospital stay that includes both mental & behavioural diagnoses and drug poisoning/overdose diagnoses. Further information can be found in Appendix 2 of the latest Drug-Related Hospital Statistics publication
