This release presents provisional figures for vital events which were registered in Scotland in the period from 1 April 2014 to 30 June 2014, inclusive. The tables and chart (available below) provide statistics of births, stillbirths, marriages, civil partnerships and deaths, including:

  • quarterly figures for Scotland for each of the past ten years;
  • the totals for each Local Authority and NHS Board area for the latest quarter; and
  • more detailed analyses of the numbers of deaths (e.g. cross-classified by sex, cause and NHS Board area) for the latest quarter.

Main Points

  • 12,846 deaths were registered in the second quarter of the year – 889 (6.5 per cent) fewer than in the same period of 2013.

  • 14,021 births were registered in Scotland between 1 April and 30 June 2014 – 112 (0.8 per cent) more than in the same period of 2013. The total number of births for the second quarter fell to a low of around 12,600 in 2002. It then rose to around 14,900 in 2008 before falling again to the current level of around 14,000 in 2014.

  • There were 8,342 marriages, 229 more than the figure for the second quarter of 2013 (a rise of 2.8 per cent).

  • There were 129 civil partnerships (54 male and 75 female), 12 fewer than during the second quarter of 2013.

  • Compared with the same period in 2013, the number of deaths from coronary heart disease fell by 11.9 per cent to 1,634, deaths from stroke fell by 13.6 per cent to 976, and there were 3,837 deaths from cancer (a fall of 3.8 per cent).
