Section 1: Summary

Correction of error
We regret that, until 11 June 2010, the figures in the 'standardised death rate' column in Table 1.3 were wrong. Due to an editing error, that column contained a copy of the 'crude' / 'unstandardised' death rates that appear in the previous column. (The standardised death rates that were given in Table 2 of Appendix 1 of 'Scotland's Population 2008' were all correct, as were the standardised birth rates that appear earlier in Table 1.3 and the other standardised rates and ratios that appear elsewhere in the Vital Events Reference Tables.) The figures have now been corrected, and we have amended the spreadsheet from which they are taken in order to reduce the likelihood of such an error occurring again. We apologise for any problems or inconvenience caused by our error.

Standardised rates and standardised mortality ratios

A straight comparison of crude rates between areas may present a misleading picture because of differences in the sex and age structure of the respective populations. The technique of standardisation has been used in certain tables to remedy this. In general, standardisation involves a comparison of the actual number of events occuring in an area with the aggregate number expected if the age/sex specific rates in the standard population were applied to the age/sex groups of the observed population. The results have been expressed either as standardised rates (Table 1.3 and Table 1.4) or as standardised mortality ratios (SMRs) where the standard rate (for Scotland or the United Kingdom) equals 100 (Table 1.5 and Table 1.7).
