Background
Population estimates for various special areas can be accessed using the links below. Estimates for the special areas (except Settlements and Localities) are built up using the data zone level small area population estimates. Data zones do not always fit exactly into the boundaries of other geographical areas, so they are allocated on a best-fit basis. An evaluation of non-standard geography population estimates has been carried out to assess special area population estimates built up in this way.
Small area population estimates time series on 2011 Data Zones (2001-2010)
A consistent time series of small area population estimates on 2011 Data Zone boundaries is available from 2001 to 2010. Please always refer to the population estimates on the latest data zone boundaries to get the latest data available for small areas within Scotland.
Mid-year population estimates - age distribution errors
NRS identified an error in the Scottish mid-year population estimates for 2002 to 2010 affecting the age distribution of older age groups which made the 90+ population too small and the population of those aged 81 to 89 too large. 2001 Data Zone based population estimates are based on the uncorrected mid-year population estimates. Further information on the error can be found within this document.
