Description

The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) provides a relative ranking of the data zones in Scotland from 1 (most deprived) to 6,976 (least deprived) based on a weighted combination of data for seven domains: income, employment, health, education, skills and training, geographic access to services, crime and housing. The dataset includes ranks for each domain, as well as quantile bands for the overall and domain ranks (5%, 10% and 20%).

Each data zone is assigned to vigintiles, deciles and quintiles, with band 1 containing the most deprived data zones. For instance, SIMD decile 1 contains the most deprived 10% of data zones and decile 10 contains the least deprived 10% of data zones.

When comparing results across different iterations of SIMD, it is important to take account of changes to the methodology used to construct the individual domains and the overall SIMD between iterations, as well as changes in geographical units as data zones change for each Census.

More information can be found on the Scottish Government website for SIMD 2020 and SIMD 2016 and previous iterations.

Confidentiality Policy

This dataset does not contain any sensitive of personal information.

Quality Management

Further information on the background, methodology and development of Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation 2020 is available from the Scottish Government website.

Accuracy and Reliability

For some indicators, the population of the considered age group was zero in some data zones during the time period considered, and indicator rates could not be determined.

Further information on the background, methodology and development of SIMD 2020 is available from the Scottish Government website.

Coherence and Comparability

The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation is one of four indices that cover the whole of the UK. All the indices in the UK are constructed using slightly different methodologies, and so are not directly comparable. Key differences include:

  • SIMD is based on data zones which are smaller geographical units compared to the Lower Super Output Areas used for the other indices.
  • Different data sources and indicators are used in individual domains.
Accessibility and Clarity

Other resources for SIMD 2020 are available from the the Scottish Government website, including interactive mapping, local and national share calculators, and postcode and data zone look-up tools.

Relevance

The Scottish Index of Deprivation 2020 combines seven different domains (aspects) of deprivation:

  • Income
  • Employment
  • Health
  • Education, skills and training
  • Geographic access to services
  • Crime
  • Housing
Timeliness and Punctuality

This dataset is not expected to be updated.

Revisions

This dataset is not routinely revised.

Please note that a minor revision has been made to the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation 2020 as a result of an issue identified with the income domain ranks provided by the Department for Work and Pensions.

The revision only affects the income domain ranks and overall SIMD ranks. The impact is minimal for the majority of data zones, and the remainder of the SIMD 2020 is not affected. SIMD 2020v2 ranks should now be used when carrying out any analyses.

A summary of the revision is provided on the SIMD website, alongside the revised data and lookup files.
