Section 6: Deaths - Causes

Information about the basis of  the statistics is available from the Vital Events – General Background Information and the Deaths – Background Information  pages of this website.

For example, notes on the lists of causes of death and the definition of ‘years of life lost’ are available via the latter page.

Revision of death rates, and removal of the breaks in the time-series of those rates that were caused by the rebasing of population estimates to use the results of the 2011 Census

Tables 6.6, 6.7, 6.8 and 6.9 were replaced, on 19 February 2014, by versions giving revised rates for the years concerned, from 2002 to 2011, which were calculated using the 'rebased' mid-year population estimates. Until then, the versions of these tables that were available had breaks in the time-series. More information about this is available from Births and Deaths Rates: breaks in series circa 2011 section of this website. The opportunity was also taken to expand Table 6.6 to provide figures for 2000 to 2002, to expand Table 6.7 to provide figures for 2000 to 2010, and to expand all four tables to provide figures for the 2010-12 average.
