Vital Events Reference Tables 2014
Vital Events Reference Tables 2014
Section 5: Deaths
Correction 25 July 2016
Table 5.4
We regret that the 'Females' section of the originally-published version of Table 5.4 wrongly showed:
- 14 deaths for 'Bangladeshi, Bangladeshi Scottish or Bangladeshi British' and
- no deaths for 'Chinese, Chinese Scottish or Chinese British'.
It should have showed
- no deaths for 'Bangladeshi, Bangladeshi Scottish or Bangladeshi British' and
- 14 deaths for 'Chinese, Chinese Scottish or Chinese British'.
The corresponding figures for 'Persons' and 'Males' were correct, as were the figures for the other ethnic groups.
The error occurred when the table was produced in Summer 2015, by 'copying and pasting' the numbers for the different ethnic groups from the output of the Vital Events computer system into the layout of the spreadsheet for Table 5.4. The tabulations produced by the system do not have a row for any category for which all the figures would be zero. Because there were no female deaths for the 'Bangladeshi' ethnic group, there was no row for it in the output from the computer system. Unfortunately, the next row in the output (which contained the figures for the 'Chinese' ethnic group) was wrongly copied and pasted into the 'Bangladeshi' row of the table, and a row of dashes (for 'no deaths') was wrongly put into the 'Chinese' row of the table.
We apologise for any problems that may have been caused by this error.
Information about the basis of these statistics is available from the Vital Events – General Background Information and the Deaths – Background Information pages of this website.
Note
The data in Table 5.4 are not suitable for calculating reliable mortality rates for most ethnicities. Please refer to the ethnicity of the deceased section for more information.
